My team and I were lucky enough to get to spend an extended amount of time in Alaska and Anchorage in August 2025. We got to see and do so much in Anchorage, and I want to break down some of the highlights of why we love Anchorage so much.

Anchorage is a great starting or ending point for exploring the vast wilderness of Alaska. I recommend spending at least a few days in Anchorage, as there are incredible Alaskan experiences to enjoy locally.

#1 Rust’s Flying Service, we were fortunate enough to take a float plane ride from Anchorage. This was one amazing flight – departing Anchorage to one of two areas: heading towards the Chugach Mountains and over the Knik Ice Field, or across the inlet towards the Triumvirate and Capps Glaciers, exploring any wildlife you might see.

#2 Food Tours with a Local! Anchorage offers a wide variety of food, and it’s so much fun to go on a food tour with a local, where you can experience the local cuisine and learn about Anchorage’s history along the way.

#3 Hiking – Chugach State Park is one of the largest state parks in the nation. There are endless hiking trails to explore at Chugach State Park, and if you like, we can arrange a guided hike.

#4 Alaska Railroad – You can board the railroad easily in Anchorage, and this is a fantastic way to get around, as everyone traveling with you can get a great view of the landscape.

#5 Museums – The Anchorage Museum had many fascinating exhibits that we enjoyed viewing, all filled with Alaska history.

#6 Ulu Factory – Visit the local factory and buy locally made ulus. You can see locals working on the Ulus in the shop; many gift shops sell knock-offs, but I recommend visiting the local Ulu Factory to purchase an authentic Alaskan-made Ulu. The address is 211 W Ship Creek Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501. A link to their website is available here.

#7 Local Breweries – I am not a beer drinker, but even I found beers I enjoyed in Alaska. There are many different types of breweries offering a variety of beers.

There are countless other activities to see and do in and around Anchorage. This truly is the gateway to the natural wonderland that is Alaska.
