There are trips you enjoy, and then there are trips that change you. My first African safari falls into the second category. Even now, back home, I still think of this journey often.
The first drive is something you never forget. The anticipation, the quiet hum of the vehicle, the way your eyes scan every horizon line. And then, suddenly… it happens. An elephant steps out of the trees, or a giraffe lifts its head toward the trees. The feeling is electric!

Every day brought something new. We added animals to our list one by one, and our guides kept us captivated with fascinating details. One afternoon, we soared above it all in a helicopter, watching giraffes and elephants from the sky before flying over farmland and ending at a series of waterfalls. The beauty of South Africa truly never ends.
And yet, it wasn’t just the wildlife that left me changed. One day, during a midday break, we visited a local school supported by our lodge. Without it, nearby villages wouldn’t have access to quality education. Many of the staff who had cared for us all week lived in those same villages. Meeting them, hearing their stories, and being welcomed so openly was humbling. Small gestures like packing supplies, helping with a project, or simply sharing time can ripple far beyond your trip. Always ask if your travel advisor can connect you with these opportunities while traveling.

By the end of our stay, I had seen four of the Big Five… the elusive rhino will have to wait for next time, and that’s fine by me. Africa has a way of calling you back!
I came home with memories I’ll carry forever: the sound of hippos grunting in the creek, the smell of the bush at dawn, the evening G&T as the sun set. These moments linger long after the suitcases are unpacked.

Planning a safari isn’t as simple as booking a lodge. The details matter. Does your lodge use radios that interrupt the moment, or discreet earpieces that keep the experience seamless? What access do they have to the reserve? Do they offer bush walks or night drives? These choices shape the rhythm of your days and the depth of your encounters. Choosing the right safari is the difference between a nice trip and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
