Traveling Traditions. 1:1 Birthday Trips With My Sons
I previously shared our 101 Places to Visit Before You’re 12 book (linked here), which has been such a fun way to inspire family adventures. But today, I want to share another one of our favorite travel traditions!
I have three sons, and every year, we rotate who gets a 1:1 birthday trip with me. This is our fourth year doing this, and I have to say—these trips have become some of our absolute favorites.
They’re shorter getaways (usually 3-4 days, given my kids’ ages), but that doesn’t mean they aren’t packed with unforgettable moments. Each trip has been different—we’ve sailed on cruises, wandered through NYC, and most recently, explored Tulum, Mexico! I love choosing a destination that fits each child’s interests, whether that means Broadway shows, beach days, or exciting port adventures.
But my favorite part of these trips? It’s not just the destinations—it’s the uninterrupted time together. The airport conversations, the early morning balcony breakfasts, the little moments that would get lost in the hustle of daily life at home.
Travel has a way of creating space for connection, whether it’s with your kids, your spouse, or your closest friends. And that, to me, is the most valuable part of any journey. 💙
