Day 3 of our African Adventure was an experience that was soul moving for me.
I love experiential travel that allows you see the way people in other countries live.
Leaving the Masai Mara after breakfast, we traveled across the ‘breadbasket’ of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley fill the landscape as you head north to Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Maasailand.
The drive across Kenya was one of the best experiences I have ever had.
On drives like this in developing worlds, you get a front row seat to local cities, towns and villages. The local kids are so excited that the safari vehicles drive by, that they run out and wave to the tourists. I loved every minute of this!
It was eye opening and awe inspiring to see the landscape. I highly recommend that everyone do this at least once in their life.
After our drive across the country we arrived at Lake Nakuru to our hotel, Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge, which was my favorite hotel of the trip.
The Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge is located on a range of hills that form the western limits of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge has spectacular views of the Lake and the surrounding National Park. This is a great lodge to stay at for bird watching and wildlife watching.
We arrived at the Lodge and went for a swim to stretch our legs out after the drive. We ate lunch and had a siesta (a nap or midafternoon rest).
Then, we headed out for our evening game drive!
Our small group wish list was to see a black or white rhino and the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Our guide and driver Alex did not disappoint! We saw both and it was as incredible as it sounds!
When we saw the Rhinos we completed our list of seeing the “Big 5”. Our list included the lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo.
We stayed out in the park until dinner time and we saw lots of animals.
Then, we made our way back to the lodge to eat dinner and head to bed. We had another exciting day to look forward to.
Stay tuned for day 4, as we make our way to Amboseli National Park.
